received dozens of inquiries from around the world concerning a scam
that seems to be generally operating out of
Amsterdam or Madrid. We continue to receive numerous inquiries each
month. People who have participated in lotteries
before, often by mail, have been targeted. They are sent
notification that they have won a large prize on El
Gordo.
The people
notified have not even bought a ticket. They will be asked for
money up front in order to facilitate the transfer of the
winnings.
Be careful of
any notification such as this. If you have a ticket, the claim
information is on that ticket. If you do not have a lottery
ticket, you did not win on that lottery. These people are
trying to cheat you out of your money. It NEVER costs anything
to claim your winnings.
The newest
entries also include the people at SandBox.com, with their huge
$100,000,000 in a Free Internet Lottery.
The state
of Internet-based on-line free lotteries is changing
radically. Sometimes, these can be gruesome to participate
in.
The chance at free money
is always nice, but some are taking your information and selling or
renting it to many, many different of their "affiliates" who will
bombard you with their "special offers".
Of course, each and
every one will tell you that their presentation is NOT Spam - after
all, you joined one of the new 'free' on-line lotteries. The
fact is, the small print on the lottery site you joined enabled that
site to give your information to dozens of advertisers who will all
send you their "special offers".
If you like that kind of
thing, these sites are for you. I you don't, be careful when
participating in these new, overly-aggressive sites. In
checking out new Internet offerings for inclusion in this site, I
have sometimes been blasted by many dozens of these ads. NONE
of the sites that act like this are included in this
site.
