We should get this straight right now. Unless they
are free, there are NO good lottery bets,
anywhere, at any time. Period. If you are looking for value for
money, try the free Internet Lotteries. The link is on the left.
We
should look at the reason that many people play the Lottery. For the
price of a ticket, you will be purchasing a dream. Most of us have
fantasized about winning 'The Big One'. Often, the cost of the
ticket is worth the dream alone.
The
actual odds of hitting a lottery that draws 6 numbers out
of a population of 49 different numbers has a probability of one in 13,964,866. You
should be able to win the drawing once in almost 14 million tries.
As an interesting barometer, you would have to play the
lottery twice each week for the next 134,615 years before you played that many times!
There are interesting, mildly reasonable gambles, but
only if you are interested in long odds with a great payoff should you be lucky enough to
beat those odds. Some people do, so don't exclude yourself from that category.
The lottery has long odds of winning anything, and
astronomical odds that you will ever win the first prize. If you hit the big one, it
will be like a bolt of lightning that happens suddenly. This is a very rare event.
But it does happen.
It may be very remote, but someone wins these things
every once in a while! I know that one will never win a lottery without buying a
ticket first, so look around for the "best" bet - something that interests
you.
The best bet right now for lottery play would seem to be the FREE
Internet Lotteries. There is nothing like playing 30 different free
Internet lotteries, playing for a total of perhaps $60,000,000. No
charge - no cost.
With the proliferation of the
Free Lotteries on the Internet, you can indeed save
your money and play for free as much as you want! Even better, you can play at least once each day, on
over forty different sites.
Some lotteries have made themselves almost silly to
play. This includes the ones with small (say under $10 million) jackpots, and very
small second place prizes (generally under $1,000).
The
general jackpot rule is that a lottery begins to be a relatively better
bet when the prize fund reaches $1 times the odds of winning that
lottery. In our 6/49 lottery, above, this would mean a jackpot size
of $13,964,866 or more.
Usually,
your lottery is
keeping up to 55% or 60% of all of the gambled money. Also, they often have a
winning rate of only one in fifteen tickets or so. That obviously doesn't leave that
much for the players as prizes in the first place.
If you think about it, there really is no prize money
left after deducting over 60% for the lottery authorities, and then with 35% or more of
what is left to the first place winner. Second and third places here are minor
amounts.
Generally, we play these lotteries because they can change your life
forever. Unfortunately, almost all prize levels are trivial other than the eventual
first place winner.
To put this into perspective, going to Las Vegas and
playing on the craps table will cost you about 2 cents out of each dollar. Playing
the slot machines will cost you an average of about 6 to 14 cents out of each
dollar.
With lotteries, the lottery authorities take 45 cents to over 60 cents out
of each dollar. This is not a good deal.
If you have the choice, and want something outside of
the free internet lotteries, go for the lottery with the largest second and third tier
prizes. You can't control the lottery that is local to you, but the Internet may
also provide ways of allowing you to play other lotteries with all cash prizes, no tax
liability locally, and much larger second and third place prize levels.
Or, as we said, you can bring your costs to zero, and
play the free Internet lotteries. They can pay $millions, and the price is right!
Every week we read about someone who won $1,000,000 or more on line.
Lastly, the best way to lower your odds when playing a
lottery is to participate in a Lottery Club or Lottery Pool. Basically, you'll be playing for a smaller share of a lot more
entries for the same price. Many of the world's great lotteries are won by pools and
clubs.
